(FAQ) What is the Winmail.dat attachment?

KBA-01500

Question

What is the winmail.dat attachment that we receive sometimes and how can I prevent it?

Answer

A winmail.dat attachment may appear when viewing messages in WorldClient when clients send you messages composed using Microsoft's proprietary Rich Text Format in Outlook.  This format is only understood by the Microsoft Outlook client.  Since MDaemon or WorldClient does not have the ability to decode Winmail.dat files, we recommend that Outlook users compose their messages using either HTML or Plain Text formatting.

Alternatively, if attachments such as .PDF or .DOC files are seen as winmail.dat files, there is third party software that can decode these attachments.
